يهتم هذا الكتاب بفئتا التخلّف العقلي والتوحدية من الأطفال ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة. ويقدم مؤلفه الدكتور أحمد السيد سليمان دراسة حول إمكانية "تعديل سلوك الأطفال التوحديين"، ويضع خطة للعلاج يمكن لها تعديل أحد سلوكيات الطفل التوحدي، من خلال فهم الأسباب الكامنة وراء ظهور هذا السلوك. لذلك فالدراسة تركز على المهارات الحركية وتجارب في مهارات التواصل مثل المهارات اللفظية، والسمعية والكتابية والقرائية، وكل ذلك بالإستناد إلى مناهج العلاج للتوحديين المتبعة عند العلماء والتي تشكل ركيزة لكل برامج التعلم والعلاج للأطفال التوحديين.
تتألف الدراسة من خمسة فصول بالإضافة إلى برنامج تدريبي للأطفال (التوحديين يعرض الفصل الأول: نبذة تاريخية عن التوحّد (أسباب وخصائص التوحد)، بينما يعرض الفصل الثاني: صعوبات التواصل لدى التوحديين – نظرية العقل – التدريب على مهارات التواصل، وخصص الفصل الثالث لخطوات: تعديل السلوك وتعليم الأطفال التوحديين من خلال الإجراءات السلوكية، ويبحث الفصل الرابع في: المهارات النفس حركية والإتجاهات الأساسية التي يرتكز عليها العلاج باللعب ودور المدرب في جلسات المهارات النفس حركية للطفل التوحدي. ويغطي الفصل الخامس غالبية الدراسات التي اهتمت بتعديل سلوك الأطفال التوحديين. وأخيراً: البرنامج التدريبي لتعديل سلوك الأطفال التوحديين وتنمية التواصل لديهم: التدريب على: التفاعل الإجتماعي، مهارات التقليد، ومهارات الإدراك مع رسم توضيحي لكل مهارة.
