في قديم الزمان، عاش نجّار فقير يدعى جيبيتو بمفرده في غرفة صغيرة وضيقة. وذات يوم، بعد ما ازداد شعوره بالوحدة قرر صنع دمية خشبية لتؤنس وحشته، فانكبَّ على عمله بكل اهتمام ومحبة. وبفضل صدق عاطفته، صارت الدمية مميزة، وتفاجأ حين أدرك أنها تستطيع التحرك والتكلم، وأطلق عليها اسم بينوكيو.
أغدق جيبيتو على بينوكيو عطفه وحنانه، واعتبره ابناً له، وحاول تلبية كل حاجاته رغم فقره الشديد.
وذات يوم، فيما كان بينوكيو متوجهاً إلى المدرسة خدعه قط وثعلب وتعرض للمشاكل. غير أن ساحرة طيبة القلب أنقذته، ووعدها بالعودة إلى أبيه الذي كان قلقاً عليه، وبعدم الكذب كي لا يطول أنفه. إلا أنه نكث بوعده، فعانى من جراء ذلك، وندم كثيراً، إلى أن انتهى به المطاف أخيراً مع أبيه في بطن حوت كبير...
يعيد هذا الكتاب إحياء قصة جيبيتو الرائعة بقلم آن ليسن ورسومها الجميلة. تروي للأطفال قصة كلاسيكية على طريقتها، بتفاصيل مسلّية ونهاية مفاجئة.
