بدأ ديفيد يفكّر بشكلٍ متسارعٍ وهو يردّد في ذهنه: "عندما تشرق الشّمس لن يكون بمقدوري الإختباء، لا توجد أيّة أشجار هنا، سيلقون القبض عليّ حتماً حالما تمرّ أول سيّارة بقربي".
وضع يده على رأسه وكأنّه يحاول أن يعصر أفكاره لعلّه يهتدي إلى حلّ آخر: "هل عليّ أن أطلق النّار على نفسي الآن وقبل أن يلقون القبض عليّ، يبدو ذلك مخيفاً لكنّه أفضل بكثير من أن أقع أسيراً بيد قوّام صدام".
شبك ديفيد يديه ووضعهما على رأسه: "التّفكير يرهقني وأكثر ما يرهقني هو محاولة استذكار التدريب الّذي تلقّيته بخصوص التّصرّف في مثل هذه المواقف"، يجثو على ركبتيه ويتّخذ وضعية العداء الّذي يستعدّ للإنطلاق محدّثاً نفسه: "عليّ أن أتّخذ قراراً ولا أهدر الوقت، يجب أن ألجأ إلى خاصيّة حبّ البقاء، سأتصرّف كقطٍّ برّيّ محاصر يطلب النّجاة"...
قال تلك الكلمات في داخله ثمّ أمسك مسدّسه بكلتا يديه وتوجّه نحو أقرب بيت إليه من بيوت القرية.
