هذا الكتاب يروي سيرة رجل كرّس نفسه للحرب، رجل ولد ليكون قائداً ومحارباً ومخططاً، رجل كان يستطيع أن يعيش في بحبوحة من الأمن والرخاء والدعة والسلام، لكنه آثر حياة الحرب، حياة المشقة والمسؤولية والتعب.
كان باتون رجلاً مولعاً بالمغامرات، مستعداً لقيادة الهجوم تلو الهجوم وفي كل حين، ليلاً أو نهاراً وهو مع كل ذلك كان رابط الجأش قاسي الفؤاد، حديد البصر، صارم النبرة، قوي البنية، راجح العقل.
من أقواله المأثورة: على الجندي أن يخاف رئيسه أكثر من خوفه عدوه، هذا إذا شاء أن يصبح جندياً جديراً بتنفيذ ما يوكل إليه من مهمات إن في الثكنة أو في ساحة النزال، ومن هنا كان جنوده أكثر الجنود انضباطاً، وأشدهم إقداماً، وأثبتهم جناناً.
وبعد، فهذه سيرة قائد كان له النصيب الأوفى في تسريع انتصار الحلفاء في الحرب العالمية الثانية، ترى أي إنسان كان ذلك القائد؟
