لقد قدم لنا فن الرواية، روايات الحيز الضيق، وأعني بذلك الروايات التي تدور أحداثها في مكان محدد، أو زمان محدد، مع قلة شخوص الرواية، من هذه الأعمال رواية (الشيخ والبحر) للروائي آرنست همنغواي، الذي نال جائزة نوبل عام 1954، ومثلت في شريط سينمائي أبدعته هوليود، وجسد الشخصية الرئيسة فيه عجوز السينما الأمريكية الراحل سبنسر تريسي (توفي 1960) في الرواية تلك ليس هناك سوى الشيخ سانتياغو والطفل والحبر بهدوئه يشمل الشيخ الذي أزمع الصيد، حتى إذا نال بغيته هاجمه سمك قرش وأتى على صيده الثمين، تاركة إياه هيكلاً عظمياً.
هناك رواية (فندق البحيرة) للروائية البريطانية أنيتا بروكنر الحائزة على جائزة (بوكر) الأدبية فضلاً عن رواية (قصة غريق) لغابرييل غارسيا ماركيز، دان براون كتب عملاً روائياً باهراً يقترب من عوالم الرواية البوليسية ورائدتها أجاثا كريستي، كتب دان براون ما يقرب من خمس مئة صفحة، لينقل لنا أحداث روايته من خلال حلم، يحلم به بطل الرواية (لانغدون) وعلى مدى يومين!!!....
استيقظ روبرت لانغدون، فقد كان يحلم... كان جسمه دافئاً ومرتاحاً تماماً، فقد أمضى معظم ساعات اليومين الفائتين نائماً بعمق، جلس في سريره بكسل، وتذكر الآن لماذا استيقظ فجأة... فكرة أغرب من الخيال، ص 490.
وإذا كان الحيز الزماني الذي أدار فيه براون عمله الروائي (شفرة دافنشي) ضيقاً، فإنه كان ينفتح على عوالم واسعة في العاصمتين الفرنسية والبريطانية.
