أدب الرحلة نمط قائم بذاته، لكن جوهر الرحلات الحجازية ديني وليس شيئاً آخر، ولذلك نعتقد أن سبب تدوين الرحلات الحجازية هو التحدث بنعمة الله تعالى، التي يرى كل رحالة مسلم أنها اكتملت لديه بأدائه فريضة الحج والعودة سالماً إلى أهله في دياره ووطنه.
ومن أهم محطات حياة مؤلف كتابنا هذا ابن طوير الجنّة (ت 1265هــ 1849م) التي أعطته شهرته، رحلته إلى المشرق لأداء فريضة الحج، ومر خلالها بعديد من البلدان واتصل بكثير من الأعيان من رجال العلم والحكم والسياسة - مسلمين وغير مسلمين - وشاهد برّاً وبحراً مظاهر الحياة الجديدة التي تختلف عن تلك التي يعيشها قومه الشّناقطة في صحرائهم.
وقد خصص ابن طوير الجنة ثلث الرحلة لذكر الأولياء، الأحياء والأموات، وتكاد رحلته تصلح دليلاً دقيقاً للكثير من الأضرحة والمزارات في المغرب الأقصى وفي البلاد الواقعة على طريق الحج المغربي.
هذا وقد بدأ الطالب أحمد بن طوير الجنة رحلته الحجية من تيشيت سابع جمادى الأولى من العام 1245هـ ورجع إلى منطلقته مدينة وادان في 27 شعبان من عام 1250هـ أي أن مدة الرحلة قاربت الستة أعوام، ما يجعلها أطول رحلة شنقيطية وربما من أطول رحلات بلاد المغرب الكبير.
