أية مجموعة من الطلاب"الذين تدرّسهم" ترى أنها ستتعلم بدرجة أقل من غيرها هذا العام؟ قد يكون من المدهش أن نجد فصلاً تتفاوت فيه قدرات الطلاب (وأي فصل لا يتصف بهذا؟). فالقدرات هم الطلاب ذوو الطلاب الذين سيتعلمون معلومات جديدة بدرجة أقل من غيرهم هم الطلاب ذوو القدرات المرتفعة وليس الطلاب ذوي القدرات الأقل.
كيف يحدث هذا؟ يرجع هذا في الغالب إلى ظاهرة كلنا معتادون عليها: تتمثل في أهداف المنهج والتسلسل الذي يسير عليه. فكل عام تخطط للمعلمين أهدافاً معينة من المنهج يتعين عليهم تحقيقها من خلال التدريس. ولذلك تجدهم يشعرون بضغط شديد ومسؤولية عن تدريس كل ما هو محدد للصف وللموضوع الذي يدرسونه للطلاب. وتأتي المشكلة عندما يختلط عليهم معنى كل من الكلمتين: يدرّس ويعلم.
إن مسؤولية المعلم لا تنحصر بتدريس المحتوى، وإنما تشمل التدريس للطلاب، والتأكد من أنهم يتعلمون محتوى جديداً كل يوم وفي حالة الطلاب المتفوقين والموهوبين. نجد أنهم في واقع الأمر يعرفون بالفعل قدراً كبيراً من المقرر الذي يتعيّن عليهم دراسته، وأنهم يستطيعون تعلّم مادة جديدة في وقت أقل بكثير من أقرانهم.
