يتخذ هذا الكتاب موضوعاً له المغرب دولة ومجتمعاً (1844- 1944) للنظر في قضية التحديث دراسة وتحليلاً. فهو بهذا يطمح إلى المساهمة في التأريخ لمفهوم شائك في الممارسة السياسية والمعرفية من خلال ما أنتجته النخبة المغربية في المجتمع العربي الإسلامي، على الأقل من خلال فترة، ولو قصيرة، ضمن تاريخ حضاري طويل، لتعذر القدرة على الإمساك بجذور المشكلة، فقد اعتبرت عندنا مرحلة فاصلة بين عهدين: عهد العزة والهيبة وعهد التراجع والاستعمار. يرمي هذا الكتاب إلى محاولة اكتشاف مواقف النخبة المغربية من إشكال التحديث الذي ظل صداه، في تقديرنا، يتردد بين التركيز على أهميته حيناً، والخوف من الخوض في متاهاته حيناًَ آخر، لاعتبارات كان يحددها، في المقام الأول، شكل النظام العام للبلاد، وبيان إلى أي حد استطاعت هذه المواقف ذات المضامين الفقهية الاقتراب من تكوين نظرية في التحديث.
