الكتاب يحوى ثلاثة نصوص، بعضها مكمل للآخر
أولها: باب ذكر المعتزلة، من كتاب (مقالات الإسلاميين) لأبي القاسم عبدالله البلخي، تناول فيه نشأة الاعتزال، وأصل الكلمة وما دار حولها من خلاف.
وثانيها: طبقات المعتزلة، للقاضي عبدالجبار الهمذاني، أرخ فيه لعشر طبقات من المعتزلة.
وثالثها: طبقتان هما الحادية عشرة، والثانية عشرة، من كتاب شرح عيون المسائل للحاكم الجشمي.
يعتبر هذا الكتاب مصدرا من المصادر الأساسية لدراسة الاعتزال ورجاله، ويكشف عن الدور الهام الذي لعبه الاعتزال في تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي طيلة القرون الإسلامية الأولى.
ذكر الدكتور فؤاد سيد أن الباحثين ظلوا عالة على أعداء المعتزلة في ذكر أقوالهم، وإسنادها، حتى عثرت البعثة المصرية على مجموعة من كتب المعتزلة أنفسهم في اليمن عام 1951- 1952م، أوضحت كثيرا من دقائق علوم المعتزلة على لسان شيوخهم، وبهذا يظهر تفرد اليمن بحفظ تراث المعتزلة أهم تيار فكري في تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي.
