تقوم هذه الدراسة بمسح شامل ودقيق للشعر الجاهلي لتصور لنا أدق تفاصيله. فتناول قضية المحاكاة ومعناها عند كل من أرسطو وأفلاطون وكذلك عند العرب المسلمين مثل الفارابي وابن سينا.. أيضا لم يغفل آراء الأوربين والنقاد العرب مجمع كل هذا في بداية الكتاب في فضل تمهيدي.. يلية تناول الرواية الشفوية التى انتقل من خلالها الشعر الجاهلي وعلاقتها بالمحاكاة. أما موضوعات المحاكاة فقد تناولها الباب الثاني مبينا أكثر الموضوعات التى تناولها المحاكاة، تلتها صور المحاكاة التى إختص بها الباب الثالث ثم الرابع في تناول اللغة والموسيقى والأسلوب ليصل الكتاب بعدها إلى الخاتمة التى يتم فيها عرض أهم نتائج هذه الدراسة.
