يعتبر هذا العصر هو عصر تكنولوجيا المعلومات ولعل ثورة التكنولوجية التي نعيشها اليوم هي أكبر دليل على ذلك، فالتطور التكنولوجي المتمثل بتكنولوجيا الإتصالات، والمعدات وتهافت الناس والمؤسسات على إقتنائها، أدى إلى ضرورة وجود البرمجيات والتطبيقات التي تساعد على إنجاز الأعمال وحفظ البيانات وإسترجاعها، كمواكبة للتطورات الأخرى، وتعتبر نظم قواعد البيانات هي النواة الرئيسية لكثير من التطورات التي شهدها هذا العصر.
لقد مرت نظم قواعد البيانات بمراحل من التطور حتى وصلت إلى أن تكون العصب الرئيسي للمنظمات والمؤسسات والشركات بمختلف مجالاتها، وذلك من أجل التعامل مع البيانات من حيث حفظها والحصول عليها عند الطلب على شكل تقارير مطبوعة مما تساعد الإدارة العليا على إتخاذ القرارات السليمة.
لقد كان الهدف من إيجاد هذا الكتاب رغم زحمة المؤلفات في هذا المجال ومن وجهة نظرنا تحديداً هو مساعدة طلبة الدبلوم في كليات المجتمع في فهم أساسيات قواعد البيانات وإستخدامها بالشكل الأمثل.
لذلك فقد تم تقسيم الكتاب إلى وحدتين أساسيتين: الأولى: الجانب النظري والذي حاول من خلاله المؤلف تبسيط فهم القواعد الأساسية لنظم قواعد البيانات وطرق تصميمها بشكل جيد للحصول على أفضل أداء؛ الثانية: الجانب العملي والمتمثل بالتعامل مع برنامج MS Access 2000 بالصورة التي تجعل فهم تطبيق Access أكثر إمكانية وبساطة.
