رسائل بولس الرسول، هي من أوائل نصوص العهد الجديد المكتوبة، ولا تعتبر هذه النصوص منظومة في ظل الظروف المريحة المتوفرة لعلماء اليوم في المكتبات العامة، بل هي نصوص رعائية كتبت لتجيب عن أسئلة الجماعات المسيحية الأولى. هذه الإجابات الملهمة لها إطار يتجاوز الزمن كتبت فيه وجعلت في الرسول بولس اللاهوتي الأول في الكنيسة.
عندما ذهب الرسول بولس إلى دمشق ليضطهد الكنيسة هناك، أخذ الدعوة ليصبح نورأً للأمم وليبشر بالرسالة الخلاصية في كل أقاصي الأرض. منذ ذلك الوقت كانت هذه الشعلة تلتهب داخله، ولك يكن يشعر لا بهدوء ولا راحة إن لم يبشر بالإنجيل، وبشكل دائم بين اليهود والأمم. ولأنه لم يستمع لأية جهة أو سلطة دنيوية كانت تريد منه أن يتوقف عن عمله البشاري هذا، فقد أمضى لذلك فترة غير قصيرة من حياته في السجن. ولكنه لم يتوقف هناك عن عمله البشاري. وهكذا، فإن بعضاً من الرسائل التي كتبها، وهي الأجمل، مثل أفسس وفيلبي وكولوسي وفليمون قد كتبها في السجن، ولذلك دعيت برسائل السجن أو الأسر.
حاول كاتب تفاسير هذه الرسائل الأربع، رسائل السجن، أن يقيم حواراً بناءً بين تفسير آباء الكنيسة والعلم التفسيري المعاصر، وأن يقدم الكلام الكتابي للإنسان المعاصر كما فهم في التقليد الأرثوذكسي. إن الاهتمام الأساسي للرسول بولس أولاً من هذه الرسائل الأربع، هو التركيز على أن الكنيسة هي جسد المسيح. وكل انقسام أو تجزئ لهذه الوحدة يعتبر إهانة ليسوع المسيح ولكل أعضاء هذا الجسد.
