بدأ التاريخ شفوياً، ثم تحول علماً في عصور التدوين اللاحقة، حتى أن التاريخ الأوروبي، منذ هيرودوت حتى ميشليه، لم يصبح علماً أو حقلاً معرفياً أكاديمياً، إلا في القرن التاسع عشر.
ونشأ التاريخ العربي أيضاً على الروايات المنقولة والإسناد المتواتر، ومع ذلك ظلت الرواية الشفوية مصدراً مهماً من مصادر علم التاريخ؛ وهذا الكتاب الذي يحتوي أحد عشر بحثاً في هذا الميدان العلمي يتصدى بالدراسة لعدد من المفاهيم، ويتناول إشكالية الشفوي/ الكتابي.
وبحوث هذا الكتاب لا تُقتصر على العالم العربي وحده، بل إن عدداً من الباحثين الغربيين ساهم في إعداد هذه الأوراق الأمر الذي يضع بين أيدي الباحثين العرب مقاربات متوازية من تجربة التاريخ الشفوي في العالمين العربي والغربي معاً.
ولعل ما يمنح التاريخ الشفوي أهمية راهنة هو التحولات العربية الجارية اليوم، لأن كثيراً من صانعي الحوادث والفاعلين فيها غير معروفين تماماً، وستكون شهاداتهم المدونة مصدراً ثرياً من مصادر معرفة الوقائع وتفصيلاتها المهمة والمثيرة.
