الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي ومن نظرياته الإرشاد العقلاني الإنفعالي السلوكي والبيئة العربية فإن كنا نجد بها بعض الدراسات والأبحاث إلا أننا نجد ندرة في الكتب التي تناولتها فلم يتم تناولها إلا كفصل من فصول كتب الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي ولا يوجد كتب وجهت جهدها لتناول النظرية- ذلك في حدود علم الكاتب- سوى كتاب واحد هو "العلاج السلوكي الإنفعالي العقلاني" للدكتور ماهر محمود عمر، وهذا يظهر مدى افتقار المكتبة العلمية العربية.
كما أنه لا يوجد تناول للعوامل التي تساعد على انتشار الأفكار غير العقلانية مثل التنشئة الاجتماعية الأسرية غير السليمة، والعوامل المجتمعية مثل التراث الشعبي، التربية والتعليم، انتشار الجهل والأمية، ووسائل الإعلام غير الهادفة، وعدم الفهم الصحيح للمفاهيم الدينية، وكيفية الوقاية من الأفكار والمعتقدات غير العقلانية. وعلى ذلك فإن هذا الكتاب يقدم جهدا متواضعاً في سد هذه الثغرة، فيقدم الإطار النظري للإرشاد العقلاني الانفعالي السلوكي، ومكانة العقل والتفكير العقلاني في الإسلام، ودور مؤسسات المجتمع من أسرة ومدرسة وإعلام وثقافة بشكل عام في كيفية الحد من الأفكار والمعتقدات غير العقلانية واكتساب الأفراد الأفكار والمعتقدات العقلانية، ويعالج الكتاب هذه القضايا من خلال عشرة فصول.
