يغطي موضوع تناول الطعام مدى واسع من المواضيع والتي تبدأ من اختيار الطعام وإلى المشكلات المتعلقة بتناول الطعام وزيادة الوزن مثل السمنة وإضطراات الطعام وفي ميادين عدة بدءاً من العلوم الإجتماعية مثل علم النفس وعلم الإجتماع والتغذية وصولاً إلى العلوم الطبية مثل علم الفسلجة والطب النفسي والطب، وبذلك فإن العمل الحالي يركز على العوامل المؤثرة على سلوك تناول الطعام وخصوصاً على سلوك الحمية الغذائية والمكانة التي تحتلها في التسبب في إضطرابات الطعام والسمنة ومساهمتها في علاج هذه الإضطرابات طالما وصفت هذه الإضطرابات ومنها السمنة على أنها إضطرابات طبية خطرة وليست إضطرابات نفسية.
ومنذ سبعينيات القرن الماضي جذبت مشكلة أخرى جديدة من مشكلات تناول الطعام إنتباه كل من وسائل الإعلام وعامة الناس والأوساط الطبية والمؤسسات التي تعنى بالصحة وإضطرابات الطعام والتي ترتبط أيضاً بالسمنة وبشكل مباشر وهو ما أطلق عليه إصطلاح إضطراب صخب تناول الطعام والبعض الآخر من هذه المشكلة ارتبط أيضاً بمشكلات تناول الطعام وأن كل بشكل غير مباشر بسلوك فرط تناول الطعام والذي تمثل بأباء تناول الطعام العصبي وشره الطعام العصبي واللذان تم تشخيصهما على أنهما من المهددات الصحية الخطيرة بالنسبة للفتيات الشابات إذ أن كل من عدم الإقتناع الجسم والرغبة غير الصحية بالنحافة يمكن أن يلعبان دوراً وأن كان جزئياً في إنتاج هذان الإضطرابين، وبطبيعة الحال فإن الحل المباشر في إشباع حاجة الفتاة إلى أن تكون نحيفة إنما تنبع أولاً من عقلها ومن ثم تتحقق من خلال إتباع الحمية.
