هذا الكتاب يتحدث عن الإسلام، وقد صدر بعد أحداث الحادي عشر من سبتمبر. ويقول إن الأمم المتحضرة تجعل من أوقات المحن التي تمر بها كلحظات مواتية نقطة لانطلاقها. أما نحن فقد تعودنا، مع الأسف، إلى الاتجاه الصحيح من خلال تجارب الأحداث.
منذ قرون على العيش في وهم الماضي. وما من شك في أن ماضينا كان ماضياً ساطعاً، إلا أن تأثيره علينا يتسم بالدعة والخمول، ففي أثناء محاولاتنا البائسة لاسترجاع المجد المفقود للأيام الخوالي، نقف دائماً عند تمجيد الماضي ولا نتعدى ذلك. بل أصبح الماضي هو الملاذ الوحيد بالنسبة للكثير من بيننا.
وقد حاول الكاتب في هذا الكتاب إعلان ثورته على مثل هذا الملاذ، وما فيه من إفراط للإعجاب بالماضي أو وصفه على أنه كان عالماً بلا تحديات. وذلك لأنه من الواجب، على ما يراه الكاتب، أن نواجه الحقائق القاسية المتواجدة في حاضرنا وفي ماضينا أيضاً. وإذا واجهناها كذلك فإنه سيكون عاملاً وحيداً يساعدنا في التعلم من أخطاء الماضي، علماً بأن الإسلام الخالص هو القرآن الكريم والثابت من سنة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، أما الجزء الباقي فهو مزيج بين الرسالة والتاريخ، والبحث عن السلوى والعزاء في الإسلام التاريخي كان ولا زال وسيبقى أمراً مشكلاً.
