علم النسب هو العلم الذي تعرف منه أنساب الناس وهو من العلوم التي اعتنى بها العرب قبل الإسلام وبعده لما له من أثر في ضبط أنسابهم، وهو أمر يتناسب مع طبيعة حياتهم الاجتماعية. إذ أن القبيلة كانت تمثل الوحدة السياسية والاجتماعية عند العرب. وفي وقتنا هذا ما زال هذا العلم يحتل مكانة مرموقة لدى المهتمين بتثبيت الأساس النسبي لجميع العشائر. والمؤلف هو أحد هؤلاء المهتمين الذين عملوا على دراسة ما يتعلق بأنساب العديد من القبائل والعشائر في العراق، على الرغم من النقص الكبير في المعلومات الخاصة بكثير من عشائر العراق.
لذا جاء جهده هذا المتمثل بهذا الكتاب "عشيرة البودراج" لينصب في الجهد الرامي إلى سد النقص في هذا النوع من الدراسات. مستعيناً بكل ما وصل إليه من كتب ومشجرات نسبية وإقرارات نسبية ووثائق. قديمه ونسابي العشيرة وعمد إلى تدوين كل ما يتعلق بهذه العشيرة وأسلافها كما أشار إلى بعض العوائل التي تنتمي إلى العشيرة والتي جعلتها الظروف المختلفة يفتقدون أو يجهلون الحلقات التي تربط تسلسل أجداهم، فوضعهم في المكان الأكثر قرباً من الحقيقة لكي يتجدد ارتباطهم بأصلهم.
وقد احتوى كتابه هذا قسمين، تناول أولاً: موضوع الأنساب بشكل عام وأهمية النسب وتطوره كما بحث في علاقة عشيرة البودراج بموطنها الأول (سامراء)، وألقى نظرة على النظام العشائري في العراق عموماً منذ عصير ما قبل الإسلام إلى العصور العثمانية المتأخرة وحتى الوقت الحالي، وأوضح المؤلف نسب (البودراج) وتسلسل أجدادها وتفرعاتها والصلة بينها وبين العشائر التي تحمل نفس الاسم، كما بحث موضوع الرئاسة في العشيرة وأبرز رؤسائها، وألقى الضوء على أهم الشخصيات التاريخية التي أنجتها العشيرة. أما في القسم الثاني فقه تناول تفاصيل أفخاذ العشيرة وتسلسلات ارتباطهم بالسيد دراج الجد الأعلى للعشيرة حيث يذكر في هذا القسم تفاصيل ذرية عدد كبير من أولاد وأحفاد السيد أحمد دراج وأبناء وأحفاد الحاج حسين العبد الله والسيد معروف بن السيد أحمد الدراج.
