في العام 1912 انطلق ما يزيد عن 2200 مسافر على متن التيتانك، كان بينهم الأثرياء والمشاهير، والعائدين إلى وطنهم، وغيرهم من جنسيات مختلفة.
يكشف هذا الكتاب أمراً مدهشاً للكثيرين، هو أن السوريون أيضاً على متن التيتانك.
عبر سنوات من العمل الدؤوب والبحث والتقصي تمكنت ليلى سلوم إلياس أن تتعرف إلى قصة هؤلاء السوريون واللبنانيين أيضاً الذين ركبوا متن السفينة ممن نجوا. تقول الكاتبة: "حتى اليوم يذكر الكثيرون من السوريين واللبنانيين أن عدداً لا بأس به من الناس سافروا على متن التيتانك، وقد فارق معظمهم الحياة في حادثة الغرق، ولكن نظراً لعدم وجود قصة تتعلق بهم لن يكون لهؤلاء المسافرين الناطقين بالعربية، إلا القليل من الأهمية... والعمل الذي بين أيدينا الآن هو عرض لهؤلاء المسافرين، مستمد من المعلومات المتاحة ماضياً وحاضراً على حد سواء، ولا يهدف إلى تمجيد هؤلاء الأفراد وإنما كتابة تاريخهم غير المكتوب.
ثمة قصص مثيرة وراء حكايات بعض هؤلاء الركاب، منهم فر للإفلات من قبضة القانون، ومنهم كي ينقاداه، وكان من الناجين سوريان، هما الأول والثاني اللذان ماتا بعد حادثة الغرق. وهناك ناجية من التيتانك أنجبت الطفل الأول بعد النجاة، مع ذلك ثمة ناجٍ آخر قيض له أن يؤسس إمبراطورية تجارية ما تزال قائمة حتى يومنا هذا...".
وعبر فصول الكتاب الثمانية قدمت هذه الدراسة قصة هؤلاء الركاب وحياتهم وأحوالهم، وكشفت أيضاً صورة مساعي الجالية السورية في نيويورك في المساعدة على تقديم الحلول وتحسين الأحوال الطارئة لأبناء جلدتهم. وفي النتيجة يظل هذا الحيز من الكارثة جزءاً من حوليات التاريخ والمجتمع والهجرة لكلا العاملين على جانبي المحيط...
