فالملائكة هم صفوة خليقة الله تعالى، وهم سكان العالم الأعلى وبهم صلاح العالم وكمال الموجودات بتقدير العزيز الحكيم، وهم مفضلون على سكان العالم الأدنى لمعان، منها: أنهم خلقوا من جوهر النور اللطيف السماوى الذى هو خلاف الجوهر الأرضى الغالب عليه الظلمة؛ ومنها: أنهم روحانيون غير جسمانيين، مخلوقون من جوهر بسيط غير مركب ولا شبيه بأجسام الأشياء المركبة من العناصر المتغايرة وكيفيات متضادة واقعة تحت الكون والفساد، فنسبتهم إلى المركّبات كالأرواح التى لا ترى ولا تحس، وإنما أنشأها الله إنشاء ويفنيها إذا شاء. ومنها أنهم أخذوا من عبادة الله تعالى بحظ لا تبلغه القوة البشرية لخلوهم عن الشهوات ثم إنهم وإن كانوا موصوفين بأنهم سكان العالم الأعلى، وبأنهم صفوة خليقة الله تعالى فإنهم متفاضلون فى صفات الجوهر الذى خلقوا منه والمنازل التى رتبوا بها، ولهذا سموا بأسماء مختلفة كالكروبيين. والروحانيين وحملة العرش وغير ذلك من الألقاب مثل جبرائيل وميكائيل وإسرافيل وملك الموت، وإنما سموا ملائكة، لأنهم رسل الله عز وجل.
