رواية تاريخية من روائع الأدب العالمي الرفيع، ألفها "وليم ثاكري" أحد عمالقة الأدب الإنجليزي في القرن التاسع عشر، صدرت سنة 1852 وتتميز: ببراعة الحبكة الروائية مع دقة في السرد التاريخي. وتعبر عن سلوك ولغة عصر الملكة "آن" الذي دام اثني عشرة سنة (1802-14) والذي شهد حروب إنجلترا مع فرنسا وإسبانيا.

ولقد كان وراء نجاح "ثاكري" في تأليفه لهذه الرواية: معايشة لهذه الفترة من خلال قراءاته لأعمال "أديسون" و"ستيل" و"سويفت" و"جاي" وجمهرة كبيرة من الكتاب المبرزين ممن زخر بهم ذلك العصر.

والرواية تحكي قصة "آل أوموند" وهي أسرة ذات نسب عريق من طبقة نبلاء الريق. كانت مخلصة دائماً "لآل استيوارت" في سرائها وضرائها رغم ما كلفها إخلاصها من تضحيات بشرية ومادية.
