لقد عني الغربيون منذ القدم بآثار قدماء المصريين وبذلوا كل غال ورخيص في سبيل إعلان سر من أسرارهم أو كشف مجهول من عاداتهم أو وصف شأن من شؤونهم أو نقل رسم من رسومهم أو ترجمة كتابة من أوراقهم، ونقلوا إلى لغاتهم ما احتوته أوراق البردي الكثيرة وما صانعته جدران المعابد والهياكل كمن نقوش وألغاز، وفسروا تلك الكتابة التي خلفها وراءهم قدماء المصريين فكانت تاريخاً صادقاً وأثراً ناطقاً يحدث ما كان عليه القوم من مجد وجبروت ورقي ونشاط، ثم قابلوا تلك الكتابات بما وصل إلى علمهم عن المصريين من كتب قليلة كالتي خلفها هيرودوت مؤرخ اليونان و"مانيتون وديردور وبلوتارك" فأخرجوا للعالم مكتبة هائلة ألفوا كتبها وصنفوا تاريخها فألفتا في كل أمة من أمم الغرب عدداً لا يحصى من كتب مؤلفة، ومترجمة تحدث الناس حديثاً شائقاً عن الفراعنة وقدماء المصريين نحوت تلك المؤلفات شيئاً كثيراً عن تاريخهم وأخلاقهم وعاداتهم ودياناتهم ومعبوداتهم وملوكهم وملكاتهم وفتوحاتهم ومستعمراتهم ومعابدهم وفنونهم وصناعاتهم وتجارتهم...الخ.
وفي هذا الكتاب جمع المؤلف ما تيسر له من معلومات من تلك المؤلفات حول تلك المدنية المصرية الغابرة وذلك مما نقله عن علماء الغرب وكبار ورجال الآثار الغربيين حيث عمد إلى التجوال بين صحف تلك الصادر وفصولها منتقياً ما قل ودل وأخرج من أعقاب تلك المؤلفات من محتوياتها ليقدم للقارئ معلومات جمة متنوعة حول حضارة الفراعنة من تاريخ إلى دين ومن أخلاق وعادات إلى أدب وكتابات.
