لقد وفقنا الله سبحانه وتعالى إلى إخراج هذا الكتاب وتقديمه إلى المكتبة العربية، وقضية أمننا الغذائى لا تزال هى شغل الكثير من أجزاء عالمنا العربي وقضيته الأولى، بل وفي وقت يشتد فيه الطلب على الغذاء عامة، وفي عالم تسوده المجاعات في العديد من اركانه بحيث يمكن لشجرة النخيل والتي كانت أمناً وغذاءاً للعديد من الشعوب عبر التاريخ، أن تسهم بإنتاجها بشكل مباشر أو غير مباشر في حل جزء من الأزمة الغذائية التي تشتد يوماً بعد يوم.
والنخلة لا تحتاج إلى تعريف بقيمتها وأهميتها، فهى تعتبر من أقدم الأشجار التي عرفها الإنسان، والتي ارتبطت مع أكثر الأساطير التاريخية والحكايات الموغلة في القدم.
ومع دخول القرن العشرين تفجرت آبار البترول في كثير من أنحاء عالمنا العربي، وتغيرت الحالة الاقتصادية والسلوكيات الغذائية مما أدى إلى قلة استهلاك التمور في هذه البلاد. وعانت النخلة الكثير من الإهمال فإنعكس ذلك على تدهور إنتاجها وتدنى نوعية ثمارها.
إلا أن الله سبحانه وتعالى أراد بالنخلة خيراً فسخر لها من يهتم بها حتى في المناطق البعيدة عن مناطقها، فاصدروا العديد من البحوث والدراسات والتي أدت نتائجها إلى إيجاد الحلول لكثير من المعوقات. كما اهتمت المراكز البحثية والجامعات والمنظمات الإقليمية والعالمية بالنخلة، وساهمت بالعديد من البرامج التنفيذية والمشاريع البحثية في هذا المجال.
ورغم هذه الجهود المبذولة مؤخراً للعناية بالنخيل، إلا أن الأمر مازال يحتاج إلى المزيد من الجهود والتضافر للتغلب على الوسائل التقليدية القديمة، والمعوقات الفنية في عمليات الخدمة ونوعية وكمية مستلزمات الإنتاج والتعرض للآفات والأمراض، وضرورة المعالجة السليمة للتمور قبل وما بعد الحصاد. هذا بالإضافة إلى إيجاد الحلول للتغلب على المعوقات الاقتصادية، وتطوير التعبئة والصناعات القائمة على التمور ومخلفات النخلة. وهذا ما تعرض له هذا الكتاب في أبوابه وفصوله المختلفة.
وقد جاء الكتاب في جزئين تناول الأول منهما تاريخ نشأة النخلة، وإكثارها وزراعتها والعناية بها، أما الثاني فتناول أصناف التمور ومعاملات الثمار بعد القطف، الصناعات القائمة على الثمار والمنتجات الثانوية للنخيل والآفات والأمراض وطرق مقاومتها.
