سجل وثائقي يشمل حقبة هامة من تاريخ شبه الجزيرة العربية، هي حقبة التنقيب عن النفط وإنتاجه، الذي عُرف باسم «الذهب الأسود» للتغيرات الملحوظة التي أتى بها في نمط الحياة بالمنطقة. والوثائق التي يتضمنها الكتاب صور ورسوم التقطها والد المؤلف أثناء فترة عمله جيولوجياً في شركات نفط مختلفة (1947-1954مـ)؛ ليؤكد أن «الصورة الواحدة قد تساوي ألف كلمة أو أكثر». يتناول الكتاب مختلف جوانب الحياة والعمل في الصحراء أثناء أعمال التنقيب عن النفط في منطقة أدّت فيها تجارة البخور دوراً هاماً. لقد حرص المؤلف على بيان عمليات التنقيب عن النفط واستكشافات جغرافية هامة لم يكن لدى الغرب علم يُذكر بها، وأدت إلى معلومات أنثروبولوجية جَمّة. ويكشف الكثير من صور الكتاب عن الناس الذين عاشوا وعملوا في قلب الصحراء الشاسعة، وأسلوب حياتهم، ومساكنهم، وواحاتهم، ووسائل ترحالهم من الإبل والسفن، وعاداتهم وتقاليدهم، وموارد رزقهم من صيد السمك والغوص على اللؤلؤ، والإقامة في واحاتهم في ظلال النخيل
