"لا أنا لست كذلك"، قلت محتجاً، "فأنا لست ذاك الرجل الذي يبدو أنكما تظنان أنه أنا. فقد فشلت كزوج، ولم أكن أباً جيداً أيضاً. أنتما شخصان طيبان – أما أنا فلا. إنكما شخصان ودودان، رقيقان إلى درجة كبيرة إلى درجة فاجأتني. يجب أن يكون لكلّ شخص أب وأمّ مثلكما، حتى ابني. ومع أنني لعبت دور الابن المخلص معكما، فلا يعرف أحد كيف كان من الممكن أن أعاملكما لو كنتما تعيشان كلّ هذه السنوات. أما بالنسبة لمهنتي؟ فأنا لم أنجز شيئاً عظيماً حقاً. فأنا مجرد كاتب من الدرجة الثانية يتنافس على..." توقفت في منتصف الجملة. ثمة شيء كان يحدث لأمّي. بوسعي أن أرى شكل كتفيها بوضوح شديد، لكنني أدركت أنني أستطيع أن أرى أيضاً من خلالها. مذهولاً، التفتُ لأنظر إلى أبي. كان كتفاه وجذعه قد بدآ يبهتان أيضاً. هذا ما قصدته أمّي. بهذه الطريقة سيغادرانني. جلست هناك، غير قادر على أن أتكلم. "كلّ شيء سيكون على ما يرام يا بني"، قال أبي، "لا تقل كلمة أخرى". "إننا فخورون بك كثيراً" قالت أمّي. "إننا فخورون جداً بك"، ردّد أبي، "إصنع لنا معروفاً وتوقّف عن أن تكون قاسياً على نفسك. يجب على الرجل أن يعتمد على نفسه، كما تعرف. لن يفعل ذلك أحد غيره". "أرجوكما لا تذهبا"، قلت متوسلاً. أصبح صوتي فجأة مثل صوت طفل صغير. "يبدو أننا لا نستطيع أن نقرر ذلك"، قال أبي، "كنت أرجو على الأقل أن يتاح لنا وقت أطول قليلاً". "لا!" . "اعتن بنفسك". "لا أظن أننا سنراك بعد الآن أبداً".
