تُرك هذا الكتاب وهو حزمةٌ من الأوراق المبعثرة على أحد أسرةِ المرضى في إحدى المصحات العقلية. لم يكن يحمل عنواناً، ولكني ما جٓهلتُ عنوانهُ قط! في الحقيقة.. إنني ترددت كثيراً في نشره لولا اعتياد صاحبته على زيارتي في كل ليلةٍ أغفو بها على مكتبي مرهقاً من العمل. فحلمتُ بها تقرؤه، وسمعت صوتها لأول مرة. فلطالما رجوتها أن تتحدث معي، ولكنها ترفض ذلك دون أن تنبس ببنت شفة. في بدايةِ الأمر بدوت منزعجاً من صمتها وامتناعها عن الحديث معي ومع كل شخص. فظننت أن الأمر يتعلق بكوني رجلا؛ فأتيتُ لها برفيقة فامتنعت بذاتِ الطريقة. ما إن أتذكرها حتى يأتي على مخيلتي جلوسها ممددةً رجليها فوق سريرها.. تائهةٌ في قدميها تطيل النظر بها كفاقده بصر، أو ربما كانت تشتهي التهامها وما منعها إلا صعوبة الوصول إليها. أما صوتها؛ فوقع رنينه على قلبي..فكان رقيقا ناعما لا يشبهُ حروفها. كان لطيفاً على مسمعي يشبهُ شيئا من سمفونيةٍ هادئة، وشرَعت تقرأ لي ما ظنت أنني قرأته على عجل، وتسرق أثناء قراءتها نظراتٍ للفراغ تُبددها بابتسامةٍ موجعة.وبين كلمةٍ وأخرى تأخذ نفساً عميقاً، وتزفُره كنسمات الليل الساكن نفَسُها. الكلمات من شفتيها سُكرٌ حلال، وإن خالطهُ حزنها. عيناها ترجفان كقلبها، والخوف قد استحوذ على جسدها. تغرز أظافرها في فخذها حتى ظننت أنها أدمته وربما فعلت.
