بالرغم من حظر تعلم اللغة العربية، واستبدال الحروف اللاتينية بدلا من العربية لكتابة اللغة التركية في العهد الأتاتوركي؛ فإن الأتراك ظلوا شغوفين بتعلم الربية وتعليمها، وما إن أتيحت لهم الفرصة حتى تدفقوا في تعلمها، والالتحاق بالمدارس التي تدرسها، وهو ما تؤكده الإحصائيات الرسمية، حيث إن عدد مدارس الأئمة والخطباء للمرحلة الإعدادية بلغ 1961 مدرسة يدرس فيها 524295 طالبا وطالبة، بينما بلغ عدد مدارس الأئمة والخطباء للمرحلة الثانوية 1149 مدرسة يدرس فيها 677205 طلاب وطالبات.
