يوضح البحث الدقيق وجود فرق أساسى بين الميراث الفكرى للإغريق وبين الميراث الفكرى للكتاب المقدس. فحين امتلك الإغريق صورة علمية موسعة عن العالم وأرسوا أصول بعض الفروع العلمية مثل: علم الفضاء والبصريات؛ نجد على نقيض ذلك أن الكتاب المقدس لم يبين أى صورة للعالم، ولم يتضمن بيانات علمية قد تستخدم كأساس لتقدم إضافى. وبالتالى، كانت مساهمات اليهود الباقية الأثر أقل بكثير من مساهمات الإغريق للمحتوى المادى لعلومنا.ومع أن الدين عامل مهم فى خلق المناخ الروحى للفكر إلا أنه ليس العامل الوحيد؛ بل كان للمؤثرات الخارجية من إجتماعية واإقتصادية وسياسية وجغرافية، فضلاً عن المؤثرات الداخلية مثل الفلسفة أو الأخلاق- مقامها كذلك. وبتداخل هذه العوامل وتشابكها يصبح الموقف أكثر تعقيداً وتشابكاً، مثل التداخل الشديد للمفاهيم الدينية وللمفاهيم الإجتماعية. وكان الدين، فى الفترة التى نشأ خلالها العلم الحديث، أحد أكثر العوامل المؤثرة فى الحياة الفكرية؛ إذ أثرت اعتقادات الناس عن الرب (أو الآلهة) على تصورهم عن الطبيعة والذى أثر فى المقابل على طريقة بحثهم للطبيعة، يعنى على علمهم.
