اسمه الحقيقي روبرت وودورد (بوب) مواليد (26 مارس 1943) مولود في مدينة جنيف في ولاية الينوي خريج جامعة ييل Yale University محقق صحفي عمل في سنة 1971 بصحيفة الواشنطن بوست مراسل صحفي يعد الكاتب بوب ودورد من أشهرالكتاب الأمريكيون، ويسمى بمفجر فضيحة ووترغيت.

كان هذا هو الوضع عموماً في الشهور التي سبقت عملية بنما ،وإن كان الرئيس - باعتباره القائد الاعلي هو الذي إتخذ في النهاية قرار الغزو.
لكن أزمة الخليج الفارسي كانت مختلفة ، فقد كرس الرئيس بوش وعاملوه في البيت الأبيض اهتماماً كبيراً لها منذ البداية ، وأداروا الأزمة من شارع بنسلفانيا ، وحين يشترك الرئيس ومستشاروه فانهم هم الذين يريدون العرض.
ومن ثم فان هذا ليس كتاباً عن البنتاجون ، وإن كان المبني والعسكريون يلعبون أدواراً رئيسية فيه وليس هذا الكتاب عن معظم الأشياء التي يقوم بها العسكريون ، فهو ليس عن شراء الأسلحة ، أو معارك ميزانية الدفاع ، أو التجنيد أو التدريب أو المناورات العسكرية الميدانية . وهي لا يمس - الا باستثناءات نادرة وموجزة - الطبقة التي خاض بها الجيش فعلا حروب السنوات القليلة الأخيرة.
وهو لن يأخذ في طائرات الهليوكبتر الهابطة في مدينة بنما ، ولا الي معارك.
الدبابات الصحراوية في العراق والكويت. وإنما هو في المقام الأول كتاب عن كيف تقرر الولايات المتحدة خوض حروبها قبل أن ينطلق الرصاص . والمسرح الرئيسي هو واشنطون ، والفعل الرئيسي هو الدفع والجذب بين اللاعبين الأطراف في عملية اتخاذ القرار ، سواء داخل البنتاجون أو خارجه .
وإتخاذ القرار علي أعلي مستويات الحكومة الوطنية تفاعل انساني معقد . والقصة الداخلية للحكومة تحوي محادثات وحججا واجتماعات ومكالمات هاتفية ومواقفاً شخصية وخلفيات وعلاقات . وهذه القصة الإنسانية هي قلب الكتاب.
