لم تكن ملحمة "الشاه - نامي" رأسمالاً ميتاً أو زينة في المكتبات، أو تمثالاً خالداً للكتابة لا يقرؤه أحد، بل إن الملحمة بقيت حية، ولذلك فليس غريباً أن تستقطب اهتمام الرسامين الذين تركوا لنا عدداً هائلاً من المنمنمات في مخطوطات الشاه نامي، التي عكست لنا عقلية خالقيها ونظرياتهم الفنية.
المنمنمات المعروضة في كتابنا هي أكثر النماذج شيوعاً، وقد اختيرت من بين ما تزيد عن الألف من المنمنمات التي تزين المخطوطات المحفوظة في لينينغراد.
وقد أعيد إصدار سلسلة كاملة من المنمنمات الإيرانية في مطبوعات مختلفة بمناسبة الاحتفال السنوي للفردوسي بين عامي 1934-1935. فقمنا باختيار المنمنمات وإدخالها في كتابنا بحيث لا نكتفي بتوضيح حول تطور المنمنمات في ملحمة الشاه نامي، بل أيضاً أن تطور التصوير في مخطوطة الشاه نامي هو حقيقة حادث مهم في تطور الفن التصويري في إيران.
