هذا الكتاب يضم بين طياته باكورة الناتج الروائي لدوستويفسكي الذي أحرزه المؤلف الشاب وجاءت مؤشراً على اهتمامه المبكر بالكتابة الأدبية الروائية وأول مؤشر لعبقريته المبدعة. هدف هذا الكتاب هو التعرف عن كثب إلى روائع الأدب الروسي والاهتمام بتراث الأدب العالمي.
ففي هذا المجلد الأول من أعمال دوستويفسكي الأدبية ثلاث قصص (الفقراء، المثل، قلب ضعيف) كتبها في السنين الثلاث الأولى من نشاطه الأدبي، تفاوتت من حيث النوع والقيمة ولقد استقبلها النقاد استقبالاً مختلفاً. لكنها تجمع أولاً على وصف شخصيات قلقة ورسم وجوه معذبة لا يرجع ما تعانيه من قلق وعذاب إلى طبيعتها وحدها وإنما يرجع كذلك إلى الظروف القاسية التي تحيط بها وإلى الظلم الاجتماعي الذي يثقل على صدورها.
وتجتمع هذه القصة ثانياً على العمق في النفاذ إلى أغوار النفس، وسبر تناقضاتها والتقاط أخفى خلجاتها. وأخيراً يعدّ هذا المجلد واحداً في سلسلة مجلدات صدرت للكشف عن الأعمال الأدبية الكاملة لـ"دوستويفسكي".
