تدرس الجغرافيا مظاهر سطح الأرض ونشاط الإنسان في البيئة. وهذا النشاط البشري عملية ملاءمة وتطوير دائمة، بدأت منذ ظهر هذا الكائن على سطح الأرض، كما أن مظاهر السطح في تغير دائم. والشعوب وتكوينها واستقرارها في مواطنها المختلفة في عملية تغير مستمر. هذا التغير والتطور والملاءمة عملية نمت في زمن. والعالم الذي نعيش فيه نتيجة هذا التطور والتغير المستمرين ومن ثم كان لا بد لفهمه من أن نستعين- في دراسة جغرافيتنا- ببعد ثالث هو البعد الزمني الذي بدونه تصبح دراسة الجغرافية الحالية دراسة مبتورة وصورة مسطحة عمق فيها: وهذه هي دراسة الجغرافية التاريخية. ودراسة الجغرافيا بأبعادها الثلاثة: المكان والإنسان والزمان.
ولقد تركنا عن عمد القسم الأول، حيث عولج في عديد من المؤلفات الجيولوجية والأحيائية المختلفة. ورغم أن تطور الإنسان البيولوجي قد خضع لقوانين التطور الأحيائية كثيرة من أفراد المملكة الحيوانية، إلا أن هذا التطور قد خضع أيضًا للتطور الحضاري، كأنما عاون الإنسان بنفسه في تطوير نفسه عضويًا. وبذلك حدث تدخل بين التطور العضوي والتطور الحاضري، الأمر الذي جعلنا نوجز هذ القسم، ويستطيع القارئ أن يرجع إلى مؤلفينا وغيرهما في هذا الموضوع.
وينقسم هذا الكتاب إلى بابين رئيسين: الباب الأول ويدرس تطور المسرح الجغرافي في الزمن الرابع الذي امتاز بتغيرات مناخية كبرى، غيرت معالم السطح وتركت آثارها عليه سواء كان ذلك في العروض العليا أو العروض الدنيا، وقد قام بكتابة هذا الباب الدكتور غلاب. أما الباب الثاني فيشمل مقدمة موجزة عن تطور الإنسان كتبها الدكتور غلاب أيضًا. ثم التطور الحضاري في العصر الحجري القديم والعصر الحجري الحديث وقد كتبها الدكتور يسري، ثم عصري البرنزي والحديد وقد اشترك المؤلفان في كتابتهما.
