ولد جان اسمين، مؤلف هذا الكتاب، عام 1923 وخدم ضابطاً في البحرية. وقد أجيز من مدرسة اللغات الشرقية وأصبح مساعداً للملحق البحري في اليابان من عام 1953 إلى 1955, ثم مديراً لشركة آلات بول للشرق الأقصى وهذا ما يسر له التجوال في الصين، وعُين ملحقاً صحفياً في بكين من ديسمبر/كانون أول 1965 إلى يونيو/حزيران 1968 في أثناء الثورة الثقافية. ولقد ساعدته معرفته للغة الصينية ووجوده في بكين على متابعة تقلبات الثورة الثقافية المختلفة، متجنباً التعلق بغرائب الأمور والمظاهر المسرحية التي تعلقت بها الصحافة الغربية في تغطية أخبار الصين في تلك الفترة، ساعياً في دراسته للنفاذ إلى جوهر الأحداث باحثاً، تارة في الدور الذي لعبه الكوادر السياسيون والعسكريون، وطوراً في دور الفلاحين والعمال ثم في دور المثقفين والطلاب واليساريين...
ذلك أنه كان للثورة يساريوها المتطرفون. كانت الصين تبدو ساكنة، مستريحة تجمع جهدها في تصحيح أخطائها من عام 1958 إلى 1964 وهي فترة زادت فيها الأفواه ثمانين مليوناً دون أن يزداد الدخل القومي كثيراً. وبدت في نهاية 1965 كأنما ليس فيها مكان إلا للحميد العقيم واستصلاح الأراضي المعقولة والحسابات والنظام. وفجأة انفجرت فيها الثورة الثقافية. فهل جاءت فجأة حقاً. وإذا لم تكن كذلك فما هي حقيقة الصراع بين الخطين الرئيسيين في سياسة البلاد: خط ماوتسي-تونغ وخط ليوتشاوشي؟ وأبعاده وأيديولوجيته؟ فبالغوص إلى الأعماق في خضم ذلك المحيط العجيب المزدحم بثمانمائة مليون وتلمس تناقضاته الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والإيديو واستشفاف مخاوفه وتطلعاته تمكن المؤلف من أن يعتد على عقلانية لهذه الصين التي مازالت في أذهان الناس أقرب إلى الأسطورة، وذلك بنوع من البساطة المشرقة
