هذا الكتاب قراءة لموضوعات وقضايا فكرية تبدأ بدراسات تأسيسية تتبع مشكلات النقد الأدبي عبر نظرياته الحديثة أما القسم الآخر فيمثل عدداً من المقاربات النقدية التطبيقية لشعر عفيفي مطر في موضوعين مستقلين، الأول يدرس شعره بين إيجابية الغموض بما هو ميزة في الشعر أو سلبيات الإبهام، ثم قراءة كمالية عن توظيف عفيفي مطر تقنية القناع للكشف عن علاقة المثقف بالسلطة وموقفه من المجتمع، ثم قراءة للإتجاه النفسي عند عز الدين إسماعيل الذي شغلته الأبعاد النفسية واتجاهاتها في تفسير العمل الأدبي، ثم دراسة تطبيقية لعرض مفهوم القراءة وإساءة القراءة عبر شعر البارودي. وتأتي دراسة: بنية التكرار في شعر الخنساء، لتكشف عن دور التكرار المهم في بناء القصيدة العربية القديمة، أما الموضوع الأخير فهو قراءة المشهد الشعري الجديد وانبثاق نموذج الحداثة فيه، وقد توخينا اعتماد أسلوب يمزج بين النظري والموضوعي في كثير من قضايا النقد المتشابكة. وربما كان الهدف الأول لهذا الكتاب هو الإشتباك مع الواقع النقدي ودعماً لثقافة الجدل الخلاق مع هذا المجتمع.
