يكشف هذا الكتاب عن إسهام المناطقة العرب في وضع أسس البحث الدلالي العربي في مختلف أبعاده، وقد انطلق صاحبه من أن مجال الدلالة العربي يتشكل من مكونات متعددة يحتل المكون المنطقي ضمنها موقعاً متميزاً.
وبين أن هناك تصورين للدلالة عند مفكري العرب القدامى تحكما في وضع أصولها وفي إشتقاق مسائلها وتوجيه مباحثها؛ أحدهما تصور دلالي شكلي نحا بالدلالة منحىً صورياً، وأصبحت الدلالة معه كليةً وثابتةً لا تأخذ بالأبعاد التداولية، وتعنى أساساً بالدلالة اللفظية الوضعية المطابقية؛ والآخر تصور دلالي تداولي ربط الدلالة بقصد المتكلم والمستمع وإرادتهما وأحوالهما، وبمقام التواصل وسياقه.
ويعْنى أصحاب هذا التصور بدراسة حيز المعنى في اللسان الطبيعي الذي يتسم باللبس، ويشتمل على ظواهر المضمر بأنواعه والإستدلال والإستلزام، ويغلب عليه المجاز؛ لذلك كان أكثر إعتنائهم في إنتاجهم منصباً على دلالة الإلتزام، ووقف عند نظر المناطقة في أمور اللفظ المفرد بوصفه تمهيداً لموضوع القول الشارح، وبحث في مسائل المعنى المفرد بوصفه مادةً للتعريف، وأظهر جهود القدماء وإضافاتهم وإضافاتهم في موضوع التعريف، وشروطه، وهيئته، وأنواعه، ومدى إستثمار خلاصات هذه المباحث في التنظير للمعجم وفي صناعة المعجمات اللغوية.
وتعقب كذلك تصورات البيانيين بشأن مفهوم "الصدق" وما يرتبط به من أسئلة ومباحث، إذ أن الصدْق عندهم مميز للقول الخبري، ويقوم على المطابقة: مطابقة الكلام للواقع، أو مطابقته للإعتقاد أو مطابقته للواقع والإعتقاد معاً.
ولقد استندت الدلالية المعاصرة في تناولها لمفهوم "الصدْق" إلى أعمال غوتلوب فريغه في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين التي عدتْ نقطة تحول في مسار البحث الدلالي المعاصر، فعمل ألفريد تارسكي، إستناداً إلى هذه الأعمال، على بناء تصور دلالي للصدِّق سرعان ما تبين عدم كفايته، فظهرت تصورات تداولية تحاول تجاوز قصوره.
