إنَّ أوَّل إنحراف كان في صفوف هذه الأمة هو الإنحراف في فهم بعض نصوص الشريعة، فبدأ الغلوُّ والإنحراف في الخوارج الذين غلَّبوا جانب نصوص الوعيد، دون النظر إلى النصوص الأخرى المقابلة لها، ثم ظهرت المرجئة يعكس قولهم، فغلَّبوا نصوص الوعد، دون النظر إلى ما يقابلها من نصوص الوعيد.
ولا سبيل إلى الخروج من هذه الإنحرافات وهذا الفهم الخاطئ إلا بالرجوع إلى منهج أهل السنّة والجماعة في فهم هذه النصوص على ضوء الكتاب والسنّة، وفهم سلف هذه الأمة من الصحابة والتابعين ومَن سار على منهجهم إلى يوم الدين.
قسم هذا البحث إلى مقدمة، وتمهيد، وثمانية فصول، وخاتمة، وفهارس، فالمقدمة: تشتمل على أهمية الموضوع، وخطة البحث، التمهيد: يشتمل على أربعة مباحث.
المبحث الأول: أقسام المعصية، وحكمُ مرتكبها عند أهل السنة والجماعة وغيرهم من الخوارج والمعتزلة والمرجئة، المبحث الثاني: ضوابط التكفير وموانعه عند أهل السنّة والجماعة، المبحث الثالث: خطورة الكلام في مسائل التكفير بغير علم، المبحث الرابع: موقف أهل السنّة والجماعة من نصوص الوعيد.
الفصل الأول: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في إطلاق لفظ الكفر على مرتكب بعض المعاصي، الفصل الثاني: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في إطلاق لفظ الشرك على مرتكب بعض المعاصي، الفصل الثالث: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في إطلاق لفظ النفاق على مرتكب بعض المعاصي.
أما الفصل الرابع: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في إطلاق لفظ البراءة على مرتكب بعض المعاصي، الفصل الخامس: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في إطلاق نفي الإيمان عن مرتكب بعض المعاصي، الفصل السادس: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في أن من ارتكب بعض المعاصي فمات فإنه يموت على غير الإسلام، الفصل السابع: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في إطلاق اللفظ المتضمن نفيَ دخول الجنة عن مرتكب بعض المعاصي، الفصل الثامن: مسالك العلماء في توجيه الأحاديث الواردة في إطلاق اللفظ المتضمن الوعيدَ بالنار على مرتكب بعض المعاصي.
الخاتمة: يذكر فيها أهم النتائج التي توصل إليها في البحث.
