يعتبر الإعلام عنصراً هاماً من العناصر الأساسية التي تشكل هيكل المجتمع، وبنيته الإجتماعية والثقافية والتربوية والمعرفية، نظراً لارتباطه الوثيق بالمجتمع وقضاياه، حيث بإمكانه أن يقوم بإحداث التغيير في المجتمع، ويهيء المناخ لوحدة الأمة واستمرار تعاونها لتحقيق الأهداف التي ينشدها الوطن، خاصة ما يتعلق منها بدفع عجلة التنمية للأمام، ونشر الأفكار والمعلومات التي تساعد على نهضة الأمة وبناء الشخصية الإيجابية للمواطن، وذلك عن طريق تثقيف وإرشاد وتوجيه الرأي العام، كما يقوم بدوره في تأكيد وترسيخ الهوية الوطنية. وللإعلام وسائله المختلفة التي ينقل من خلالها الرسائل الإعلامية إلى الجمهور المتلقي. وتتفاوت قدرة هذه الوسائل وفاعليتها في تحقيق هذه المهمة، وعلى هذا تتحدد أهمية الوسائل الإعلامية التي أفرزها التطور الثقافي والحضاري في المجتمع.
والإعلام العسكري فرع متخصص في مجال الإعلام، ويعتبر ضمن المنظومة الإعلامية الشاملة، وهو يضطلع بنقل الصورة الصحيحة عن دور ومهام القوات المسلحة وقتي السلم والحرب، ومواجهة الإعلام المعادي، ويقوم بدور مهم في الأحوال والظروف العادية، كما يقوم بدور أكثر أهمية في الأحوال والظروف غير العادية، كالحروب. فالحرب لم تعد الآن محصورة في ميدان القتال فقط، بل تعدت ذلك لتشمل جميع الميادين في الدولة التي تخوضها، كما أنها أصبحت صراعاً بين أجهزة الإعلام، وهو صراع لا يقل ضراوة عن الصراع العسكري.
في هذا السياق يرصد هذا الكتاب التطور التاريخي للإعلام العسكري واستخداماته عبر العصور، ويضع صورة واضحة أمام العاملين في هذا المجال من رجال القوات المسلحة ليتمكنوا من وضع إستراتيجية إعلامية تتلاءم وظروف القوات المسلحة، اعتماداً على وجود كفاءات وقوى بشرية مؤهلة ومدربة في مجال الإعلام، إضافة إلى وسائل إتصال (إعلام) متكاملة.
