في كلمته لتقديم كتابه "حوار الإمامين" بوسعنا القول أن مفهوم الدين هو مدار هذا الكتاب، فالكاتب "أمين عيسى" يقدم للقارىء العربي قراءة خصبة ومبتكرة لنصه، بقدر ما يكتسب من خلاله خبرة جديدة يغني بها معرفته ويوسع أفقه الفكري. يُعرّف "عيسى" كتابه بالقول: "إن هذا الكتاب عبارة عن حوار خيالي بين إمامين. وقد استعنت بطريقة التعبير هذه لأتفادى الأسلوب الجاف الذي تتسم به الكتب التعليمية التي تبحث في إشكاليات الإسلام المعاصر.
لست صاحب الأفكار كلها الواردة في هذا الكتاب، إذ إنني أتشارك مع الآخرين في بعض منها. وقد تجنبت الإشارة إلى صاحب كل فكرة ذُكرت في بحر النص، فالإشارة إلى صاحب الفكار أو أصحابها يفرغ الحوار من مغزاه ويفقده عنصر التشويق ...".
إستناداً إلى هذا التقديم فإن الكاتب يتعامل مع مفهوم الدين كنص مفتوح، يُقرأ على سبيل التجديد والتفاعل، ومن المنظور المرآوي للحقيقة. يبدو فيها الدين دعوة ربانية صادرة عن مرجعية إلهية ، سواء تعلق ذلك بالإسلام أو بسواه، وهو ما يجسده الكاتب في نصه من خلال حوار أقامه بين إمامين يعيشان في الغرب ويريدان إيصال رسالة الإسلام ولكن؛ بين الإمام عبد الكريم والإمام رشيد الهوة سحيقة كلٌ يفهم القرآن بحسب موقعه في الزمن!.
المسافة شاسعة والحوار بين الإمامين ممتع ومسند إلى آيات بيّنات لا تأخذ معناها إلا من خلال موقع مفسرها!! هل الإسلام تكفير وعنف وظلامية؟ هل الإسلام منظومة عقائدية قوامها جملة تعاليم وأحكام غير قابلة للمساءلة والمناقشة؟ هل الإسلام عنواناً لحضارة مزدهرة؟ هذا الكتاب فيه بعض الإجابات.
في خاتمة الحوار يقول الشيخ رشيد للشيخ عبد الكريم: - أنا بالنسبة إليك يا عبد الكريم مسلم سيء؟ فيجيب عبد الكريم – لا يا شيخ رشيد، بكل بساطة، أنت لست بمسلم بعد!.
