هذه المعلومات هي عبارة عن البيانات التي تم تشغيلها بإستخدام الأساليب الرياضية والجبرية المختلفة على الحاسبات الآلية بإختلاف أنواعها وأحجامها؛ الغالبية من الأفراد يعملون في أعمال أو مهام تعتمد في نجاحها على المعلومات التي يتم ترجمتها إلى معرفة Knowledge تتعاظم كمياً وكيفياً من خلال عمليات التراكم المتتالي مع مرور الوقت، الوظائف أو الأعمال او المهام - مثل: التدريس والمحاسبة والقضاء والإدارة، تعتمد في تنفيذها إعتماداً كبيراً على الحصول على المعلومات.
لذلك كانت البداية عام 1951م في إستخدام نظم المعلومات في التطبيقات التجارية والمالية والإدارية Transaction Processing Applications، ويمكن تعريف نظام المعلومات على أنه أي نظام يمكن أن يمد الأفراد بالبيانات أو المعلومات الخاصة بعمل المؤسسات.
وفق هذه المعطيات، تناول الكتاب تقنية نظم المعلومات وفق فصول متعددة.
