نحتفل من خلال هذا الكتاب بمرور أربعمائة عام على صدور رواية دون كيخوته، التى اكتملت عام 1615 بصدور الجزء الثانى منها، لتصبح أشهر روايات العالم.
تأخذنا تلك الرواية فى سلسلة من المواقف الطريفة والمغامرات المضحكة، فى أسبانيا، التى يتعرض لها نبيل طيب حالم ومثالى بعد قراءته الكثير من قصص الفروسية وتأثره بها، لدرجة أنه يتخيل نفسه فارساً، فيطلق على نفسه اسم دون كيخوته دى لامانشا، وتعنى السيد النبيل كيخوته من لاماشا، وهى المنطقة التى كان يعيش بها.
يجوب دون كيخوته على حصانه العجوز الذى يطلق عليه اسم روثينانته -ويدل الاسم على الحالة البائسة للحصان- مع مساعدة وحامل سلاحه الساذج سانشو بانثا، لإحياء تقاليد الفروسية فى حماية الضعفاء ومساعدة المظلومين، لكنه يقع فريسة خياله ويصطدم بواقع عالمه من غش وجبن ونفاق. فنراه يخرج من مأزق ليقع فى آخر بنية طيبة ورغبة فى مساعدة الآخرين.
