يمثل العمل الفنى جزءاً من منظومة حضارية متكاملة، وفى نقل هذا الكتاب إلى العربية نقل لخلفية حضارية تتجاوز حدود الأدب الألمانى لتمتد إلى مجال العمل من اجل السلام.
فالترجمة بالدرجة الأولى نقل لفكر، وهى بذلك مسئولية أخلاقية تجاه المؤلف، ومما اعتبرته جزءاً من هذه المسئولية مراعاة المستويات اللغوية عند كيستنر التى تعد عنصراً أساسيا فى فكره، فقد لجأ إلى لغة خفيفة فى حوارات الحيوانات، نقلتها إلى العامية المصرية للمحافظة على الخصوصية اللغوية للنص، بالقطع لم يكن ذلك هو الحل الأسهل، ولكنى استرشدت بأغنية "ياورد مين يشتريك" لأحمد شوقى، فالمستمع إلى تلك الأغنية يجد العامية والفصحى ممتزجين فى تجانس يجعل السامع قد لا ينتبه إلى وجود مستويين لغويين، أما حوارات دعاة الحروب فقد نقلتها إلى الفصحى مثلما عند كيستنر، وعندما تغيرت رؤيتهم أصبحت حواراتهم مثل الحيوانات بالعامية.
ومما لا شك فيه أن كيستنر لا يكتب للاطفال بصفة خاصة، ولكن أغلب الظن أنه كان يستعير قالب الكتابة للأطفال ليبعث فى الكبار النقاء والبراءة التى فقدوها، تلك البراءة التى وجدت فيها مقياسا لفداحة ما تطورت إليه الأمور منذ كتابة هذه القصة عام 1949م، وقد ترجع براءة كيستنر إلى الخيال ذاته الذى لا يعترف بمعطيات الواقع.
