لسنوات عدة خلت، أحسست بالحاجة الماسة إلى كتاب مبسط يشرح لمرضاى الأعراض المتعددة التي تطبع مرضى الأعصاب، ويبين لهم في الوقت ذاته أن حالتهم ليست بالفاقدة الرجاء، وصحيح أن ثمة حالات معينة تتطلب علاجاً عند المتخصصين في الأمراض العصبية ولكن هذه حالات لا قياس عليها، وليس هذا الكتاب بمعنى بها، وإنما الغرض الذي من أجله وضع هذا الكتاب، أن يكون "إنقاذاً" سريعاً للكثيرين الذين يعانون في فترة أو أخرى من فترات حياتهم، ما يسمى في العرف الطبي "حالة أعصاب"
ولما كنت - ككل الأطباء - ضيق الوقت فقد جاء هذا الكتاب صغيراً، وإن كنت أرجو أن يكون قد توفر له الشرطان اللذان توخيهما فيه، الأول ألا تثقل قراءاته على الأطباء ذوي الأوقات الضيقة - وهم الذين يقع على عاتقهم حل مشكلات مرضاهم ذوي الأعصاب المختلة - والثاني أن يتضمن كافة الردود التي كنت أود أن أدلي بها إجابة عن اسئلة مرضاى من ذوي الأعصاب المضطربة والمخارج التي كنت أرجو أن أجدها لهم من الورطة التي تردوا فيها، وهي أشياء منعني أن أقولها لهم في "العيادة" ضيق وقتي.
