ساد المنهج التجريبي وهيّمن في القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر، ونجح في دراسة الكثير من ظواهر الطبيعة، وأكد بعض الفلاسفة أن الإنسان ظاهرة طبيعية، وأن في إستطاعتنا أن ندرسه وفقاً للمنهج التجريبي الذي ندرس به غيره من ظواهر الطبيعة، ونجم عن ذلك أنه قد خيل إلى الإنسان نفسه أنه أصبح جزءاً من الطبيعة، وأنه "موضوع" Object، أو مجرد شيء Thing من الأشياء تتكفل بتفسيره قوانين المادة.
بيد أننا نجد أن بعض الفلاسفة ذهبوا إلى أن الإنسان موجود عاقل يمتلك إرادة حرة، وهو بذلك يتميز عن ظواهر الطبيعة، وإذا كان يخضع للمنهج التجريبي ولقوانين الطبيعة فإنه لا يخضع لها إلا فيما يتعلق بوجوده التجريبي المحسوس، أي فيما يتعلق بالإدراك الحسي البسيط، وبالقدرة على تلقي الإحساسات.
ومن هؤلاء الفلاسفة إيمانويل كانط I.Kant (1724- 1804)، رائد الفلسفة النقدية، وصاحب الثورة الكوبرنيقية في الفلسفة، فقد ذهب كانط إلى أن الإنسان من حيث أنه موجود عاقل ينتمي إلى عالم يتميز عن العالم المحسوس، هو عالم الأخلاق.
وقد لاقى مذهب كانط الأخلاقي، الذي أصبح فيه الإنسان "شخصاً"، قبولاً وإستحساناً من جانب بعض الفلاسفة، ومن هؤلاء نيقولاي هارتمان الفيلسوف ألماني الواقعي الذي أعطى للأخلاق مكانة وأهمية عظيمة، فكتب مؤلفاً ضخماً عنوانه "الأخلاق"، ويصرح فيه بأن الأخلاق هي المصدر والدافع العميق للتفكير الفلسفي، وربما للفعل الإنساني بوجه عام، وفضلاً ذلك فإنها الهدف الأقصى للتفكير الخالص والرؤية الواسعة له.
ومن هنا، يحتل الإنسان مكانة هامة في فلسفة هارتمان الأخلاقية، فهو الذي ينقل القيم من عالمها المثالي الخاص بها إلى العالم الواقعي، وهكذا يظهر الإنسان بإعتباره ملتقى التقاطع بين قوتين غير متجانستين: العالم المثالي والعالم الواقعي، وعن طريقه وحده تؤثر القيم في العالم الواقعي.
لذا، فإن الكتاب يحاول أن يبين أن أخلاق هارتمان تدافع عن الإنسان ضد المحاولات التي تقلل من شأنه وقدره، وتحاول من ثم أن ترد إليه إعتباره من الناحية الكونية والميتافيزيقية، وتمنحه إستقلاله، وتحمله على إحتراء مبادئها، وتعلي قدره بالحرية.
