اختطف معظّم من منزله في باكستان، حيث التقى عائلته مجدداً، إبان الأسابيع العصيبة التي أعقبت هجمات الحادي عشر من أيلول/سبتمبر، وما تلا ذلك من قصف أميركي لأفغانستان، حيث كان يعمل في مجال التعليم، ومشاريع مائية.
اقتيد إلى مركز إعتقال أمريكي في قندهار، مغطى الرأس، مقيداً، مكبل اليدين، ليتم نقله فيما بعد إلى باغرام، ثم خليج غوانتانامو أخيراً. أمضى ثلاث سنوات في تلك المعتقلات، حبيس الزنزانة الإنفرادية مدة طويلة منها، ناهيك عن خضوعه لما يزيد عن ثلاثمئة إستجواب، وتعرضه للتعذيب، وتلقيه تهديدات بالموت، شاهداً على مقتل إثنين من المعتقلين. أطلق سراحه أوائل العام 2005، دون الحصول على أي تفسير أو إعتذار.
