"المقتبس في تاريخ الأندلس" لابن حيان الأندلسي (ت469هـ/1076م، كتاب بعد من أنفس كتب التاريخ الأندلسية، ومن أفضلها جودة وإتقاناً، فهو كتاب ضخم، يقع في عشرة أجزاء، تضمنت تاريخ الأندلس من لدن افتتاحها على يدي طارق بن زياد، إلى زمان المؤلف. وعلى هذا الكتاب تقوم شهرة ابن حيان، وبه عرف للناس مؤرخاً بز أقرانه، بسعة إحاطته، ودقة وصفه، وأصالة رأيه، ونزاهة حكمه.
لكن لسوء حظ الباحثين في تاريخ الأندلس أن قسماً كبيراً من هذا الكتاب قد فقد، ولم يظهر منه حتى الآن إلا أربعة أجزاء، عتا عليها الزمن فأتلف عدداً من صفحاتها، الأمر الذي أساء إلى بعض الحقائق التاريخية، وأحدث شرخاً في تتابع الأحداث وتكاملها.
وقد ورد اسم "المقتبس" في كتب التراجم والسير بأشكال عدة، فهو "المقتبس في تاريخ الأندلس"، وفقاً للزركلي، في (الأعلام)، وعمر كحالة في (معجم المؤلفين)، و"المقتبس في تاريخ رجال الأندلس)، كما أورده فيليب حتي في (تاريخ العرب)، والمقتبس من أنباء أهل الأندلس"، استناداً إلى ابن الأبار، في "الحلة السيراء".
والجزء الذي يقدم للقراء محققاً في هذا المجلد يحمل اسم "المقتبس في أخبار بلد الأندلس"، وهو الاسم الذي وضعه ابن حيان في الصفحة الأخيرة من مخطوطة هذا الجزء الأصلية، الموجودة في مكتبة الأكاديمية التاريخية بمدريد، وبه ظهر منشوراً لأول مرة في بيروت عام 1965م. وقد أبقى على هذا الاسم على حاله من دون تغيير أو تعديل، حرصاً على الحقيقة العلمية، ومنعاً للالتباس والتشويش.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى المحقق بالوقوف على الخطوات التالية في التحقيق: ضبط أسماء الأعلام والأماكن والبلدان، ضبط الشواهد الشعرية، وشرحها، وتعيين بحورها، التعريف بالأعلام والمدن الواردة في الكتاب ما أمكن، ضبط وشرح كل ما غمض أو صعب من عبارات الكتاب وألفاظه، تزويد الكتاب بمجموعة من الفهارس الفنية التي تساعد القارئ، وتمكنه من الرجوع إلى مواد الكتاب بسهولة ويسر.
