يحتوي هذا الكتاب على حكايات شعبية مصرية، وذكر شييتا الذي جمع تلك الحكايات، أن الراوي الرئيس أخذ هذه الحكايات عن أمه ومن في حكمها من نساء الأسرة المسنات، وأن الأطفال كانوا يسمعون هذه الحكايات ويتعلمونها. وكان الأخوان جريم في ألمانيا قد سجلاً واقعة نقل الأمهات والجدات والنساء المسنات لأطفال السرة والقرية مثل هذه الحكايات، ومن هنا صنفا الحكايات على أنها "حكايات الأطفال والبيوت"، ومن هذه الحكايات حكاية الشاطر محمد وحكاية دب المطبخ وحكاية شيخة العرب فلة وحكاية الصياد وابنه زحكاية دلال وحكاية البنت العفيفة وحكاية الأمير اللي اتعلم صنعة وحكاية الأمير العاشق وحكاية الجعيدي وابنه وحكاية البلبل الصياح وحكاية وردة العرب زنديق وحكاية الأمير وحصانه. ثم بينت الدراسات العلمية والنقدية التي تناولت هذا الميراث الثقافي القصصي الأسطوري الميثي من منظورات عديدة منها التربوية أن هذا الموروث لابد من استقباله على نحو متطور ليناسب المرحلة العمرية وأهداف التربية وتكوين الشخصية السوية الواعية فكرياً وسياسياً والقادرة على الجمع بين المتعة الجمالية واستلهام التراث والفهم الإبتكاري والمحيطة بحقوق الإنسان وآمال التكامل الإنساني.
