وعن سبب تأليف الكتاب يقول المؤلفون: "ونحن نعتقد أن ثمة حاجة لهذا الكتاب؛ لأن كثيرًا من الإنتاج الفكري عن الإتاحة الموضوعية في فهارس البحث المباشر، عبارة عن قطع متناثرة، تفتقر إلى التماسك. فكل مؤلف يحاول أن يؤكد على مظهر معين من الإتاحة الموضوعية، دون إعطاء اهتمام لحقيقة أن الخبط هنا وهناك لا يؤدي بالضرورة إلى تحسين الإتاحة الموضوعية في فهارس البحث المباشر".
