يشير الكتاب إلى أن مصطلح رجال الأعمال لم يكن معروفًا قبل الثروة، بل كان يطلق على أصحاب الثروات الكبرى مصطلح "الأعيان" أو "كبار الملاك"، وهم في الغالب أصحاب الملكيات الكبيرة من الأراضي الزراعية، وعادة ما كانوا يحصلون عليها نظير قربهم من الأسرة المالكة، لكونهم من رجال الجيش السابقين، أو كبار موظفي الدولة، أو الفقهاء وعلماء الدين.
لكن منتصف سبعينيات القرن العشرين شهد تحولًا آخر في السياسة الاقتصادية لمصر، لتبدأ خطوات جديدة نحو اقتصاديات السوق، وإن كانت على استحياء في ظل بقاء عمل القطاع العام. ومن هنا بدأ المجتمع المصري التعرف على مصطلح رجال الأعمال.
