العمارة الداخلية هي فن التعبير عن الفضاءات الداخلية وإيجاد البيئة المناسبة لمستخدمي هذه الفضاءات من خلال تحقيق الراحة النفسية عن طريق توزيع وتوظيف عناصر التصميم الداخلي، والتي تشمل فضلاً عن محددات الفضاء الافقية والعمودية، الأثاث واللون والضوء والشكل والخامات والأعمال التشكيلية والمواد البنائية وغيرها من العناصر. ويعرف الفضاء على وفق ذلك بانه فضاء حاجات الانسان للحصول على علاقة وثيقة في بيئته ولجلب نظام ومعنى لعالم الافعال والاحداث ، حيث ان عملية الابتكار في التصميم الداخلي يمكن اخضاعها الى التصميم النفعي اولاً، ثم الى التصميم الجمالي. ان توفير الاستعمال الملائم للبناء الذي يوفر المحيط البيئي الملائم لحياة الإنسان يتطلب تعاملاً من نوع خاص. وهنا يبرز دور التصميم ، فالتصميم كفعالية له علاقة مباشرة بشؤون كل شخص منا، أفراداً او جماعات، لأننا نعيش ونأكل ونلهو في نتاجاته. ان كفاءتنا في العمل وصحتنا وحالتنا النفسية وسعادتنا تعتمد بدرجة كبيرة على البيئة المصممة التي تحيط بنا. وان مصطلح البيئة اضحى اليوم ، واحداً من المفردات والتعابير المهمة التي كثر استعمالها و التي تتضمن مجموعة من المعاني يستخدمها الإنسان باستمرار. أن البيئة التي نعيش فيها بما تشمل من مناخ وارض تحدد طريقة حياتنا، وفي كنهها خلقت الحضارات المختلفة.
