كانت حينذاك أنابيب الألوان الزيتية تكاد تكون منعدمة في السوق بسبب الحرب العالمية وصعوبة تجديد الطلبيات. ولكن أحد المصريين كان قد استغل الفرصة وافتتح متجراً لبيع خامات الرسم والتصوير بأثمان معقولة، وكان يتعاون مع أخيه ومع زميل آخر في صنع ما يمكن صنعه محلياً من هذه الخامات عمل إنجازات فنية تجذب الأفكار. أول ما اشتريته منه كان خمسة ألون زيتيو من صناعة مصرية، هي الألوان الرئيسية الثلاثة: الأزرق والأحمر والأصفر ثم الأبيض والأسود. ونصحني أن آخذ كميتين من الأبيض لكثرة استخدامه في الألوان الزيتية. وكانت أولى محاولاتي الزيتية في أواخر إجازة الصيف مستخدماً ما اشتريته دون قيادة أو نصح أحد، إذ لم يكن بين أساتذتي أو زملائي حينذاك من يستخدم الألوان الزيتية؛ فذهبت أتخبط في التجارب والخلط واستخدام الأدوات بأنواعها والسكاكين والفرشات... إلخ.
