يقسم الكتاب إلى أربعة أبواب، يعرض الباب الأول لساحة الانطلاق والعرض الأول للفيلم السينمائي والوثائقي ألاّ وهي صالة السينما... أما الباب الثاني من هذا الكتاب فيركز على المرحلة الانتقالية للفيلم الوثائقي من السينما إلى التلفزيون أو من الشاشة العملاقة إلى الصندوق العجيب... ويخصص الباب الثالث للتلفزيون ذلك الصندوق العجيب وكيف أثَّر في تطور الفيلم الوثائقي إنتاجاً وعرضاً ونطاقاً وتأثيراً ومحاولته انتزاع ريادة الفيلم الوثائقي من السينما... وفي الباب الرابع محاولة لرصد واقع الفيلم الوثائقي في عصر الشبكة العنكبوتية (الإنترنت) والتحديات الهائلة التي يواجهها في عصر الثورة الرقمية والجيل الرابع.
وبهذا تسعى الجزيرة الوثائقية لوضع بعض الملامح المحددة لأنواع الفيلم الوثائقي الحديث كأفلام الويب دوك (وثائقي الإنترنت) أو أفلام الموبايل، وذلك على سبيل الرصد والمتابعة ومحاولة الفهم والتحليل أكثر منه من باب التنظير والتأطير؛ إذ الطبيعة سريعة التغير لهذه الأصناف من الوثائقي تجعل فكرة وضعها في قوالب جامدة محددة غير قابلة للصمود زمنياً لفترة طويلة.
